Winter Depression

Hi guys

Today I want to talk about seasonal affective disorder (SAD), especially winter depression. SAD is a type of depression that is related to seasonal changes. It begins and ends at about the same time every year. According to statistics many people around the world suffer from this disorder.

Winter Depression starts around end of the fall and continues into the winter months. Some of the symptoms are:

-Tiredness or low energy

-Problems getting along with other people

-Hypersensitivity to rejection

-Oversleeping

-Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates

-weight gain

-irritability

The symptoms may vary from one person to another.

The question is what can we do to keep the mood steady throughout the year. Here are some suggestions:

-Use fresh air

Take a walk for 10-15 minutes everyday. I mean take a walk outside ( not on a treadmill,…) and breath the fresh air. If you don’t have time for that, or it’s not a possibility for any reason, open a window first thing in the morning and let the fresh air in. It’s not as effective as the first option but it will help.

– Wear bright colors

If you’re keen on bright colored clothes, that’s great. Since I’m not I usually paint my nails in red or wear a bright lipstick. It cheers me up every time I look at my hands or look in the mirror.

-Have fresh flowers on your desk

You don’t have to buy an expensive bouquet, just a few twigs of fresh flowers would do the job. They are the best accessory for your desk and will brighten up your work space.

-Use scents

Weather it’s essential oil, perfume, body cream or candle find a scent that reminds you of a happy place or memory or makes you feel good. Then have it around all day. Don’t underestimate the power of scents and their effects on your mind and mood.

-Exercise daily

It’s important for your mental health as much as your physical, so do it no matter what. If you don’t have much time, do it at least for 30 minutes. As long as you keep your heartbeat high for a while and start sweating a little it will be helpful.

-Eat the right foods

Stay away from saturated fat, artificial sugar and eat lots of: Flax seeds, walnuts, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, Leafy green, Oatmeal, Sunflower seeds, Oranges, Lentils, Black-eyed peas, Dark chocolate, Bananas.

Please remember that I’m not an expert and these are things that I find helpful and it only works for seasonal depression. If you have a major depression you have to get professional help. Don’t brush it off it will only get worse. We need to accept that depression is a real disease which takes medicine and professional help to get over. If you have any tips please leave them in comments.
